This was my first long run in a long time. It was a beautiful morning with a good breeze coming off the lake. I was doing great until the last 2 miles when I basically blew up. Stopped for Carb Boom! at Miles 5 and 11. Water stops at Mile 7.5 and 14.3.

Lakefront Recovery to Work

Summary

Name Lakefront Recovery to Work

Start Time 7/26/2012 5:09 AM (UTC-05:00) Category My Activities:Running
Distance 9.05 mi Time 01:31:19.0

Average pace 10:05 min/mi Max. pace 05:10 min/mi

Notes Wore heart rate monitor and tried to keep it <136 bpm. Probably hung around 140 most of the time. Any other time I would have considered this pace an abject failure. With heart rate training, it's a success! It's all about perspective I suppose.

I shouldn't have eaten before running. No stomach issues. I just think the theory of low heart rate training is likely better served on an "overnight empty" stomach; less readily available fuel.

In a running first for me, saw a guy running along the shoreline path ... and shaving at the same time. Weird!

I'm sure it can't be a good thing if I can't hold marathon pace over 5 miles ...! (Took a water break after 3 and 4 miles simply so I could hold it together.)

For those keeping track, you may have noticed that I disappeared from the blog-o-sphere and, more importantly, my training last week. Yes, I missed runs on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Life got in the way I suppose. It's second quarter close at work in addition to a seemingly long list of other tasks that require my attention. I also feel like the accumulation of training as really wearing me down. I know that's the intent of the Hansons-Brooks plan I've been following. But it may have been working altogether too effectively!

On top of that, I was disappointed to learn on Friday that my "backdoor" entry into November's New York City marathon was denied. So I've now missed out on this Fall's St. George and New York City marathons. This is obviously disappointing. While I'm still not exactly certain what I'm going to do with my schedule, I'm working on a tentative plan that has me in Utah for the Rich Bouchard 10k on August 4. The course has been revised since I was there last (2010?) and it looks like the course is a lot tougher (hills). My thinking is this should offer a good test of my fitness and let me better know where I'm at with this comeback.

As for a Fall marathon, I don't know for sure but I have my eye on a new northern Utah event - the Huntsville Marathon - on September 29. The date is a little earlier than I would like but there is some appeal (and sense of urgency) to be in shape for this when the day comes. Also since it's a first-year marathon, I'm thinking I may be able to make a late decision and still get in.

Plot line to be continued ....

Notes Took the ~9-mile run into the office this morning. Since the day called for speed, I overlaid 6x800 into the run.

OBJECTIVE
WU
6x800 @ 6:38 w/400 active recoveries

It was quite warm this morning so I really focused on keeping the early reps at or slightly slower than the scheduled pace. I also really slowed the recoveries. I hoped that by doing this I could manage hitting all of my goal times for every rep. Didn't happen. It was too warm and this workout was a stretch to my overall conditioning. I knew it would be based on how I felt for my 400s and 600s the previous 2 weeks. It's a little disappointing but I'm getting a better idea of where I'm at from a fitness standpoint.
