Change Up

OBJECTIVE
run

ACHIEVED
4.13 mi.@ 8:01/mi.

7:23 AM 55° 90% 5 mph

My run started later than usual. I've observed that I'm usually faster when my runs start later in the morning. I have no idea why this would be the case. I have a couple of theories but they're wholly undeveloped at this point.

I got up early to work from home (needed to get a few items in people's inboxes before they arrived at work). Once that was taken care of, I was out the door. It was a nice morning.

I worked an shortening my stride and increasing my turnover throughout the whole run. By the way, the barefoot running/training concept no makes a whole lot more sense to me. I think it must be very difficult to overstride when you're barefoot due the pounding your heels would take.

PRE RUN
water

POST RUN
SlimFast
Later, water, multivitamin, & Kashi GoLean cereal w/1% milk

The Newtons do help emphasize the forefoot striking in similar way to barefoot running. There's very little heel cushion, and the tabs under the ball of your foot make overstriding uncomfortable and/or painful. It sounds like we're working on similar things. Let me know if you figure out a drill that helps you increase your turnover. One thing that I read about today is to focus on pumping your arms faster- your feet should follow (but I haven't tried it yet)

Hey Rockets Fan!
That game made me want to puke! I'll bet you were sad too. Don't you think those Jazz guys are dirty players and like to flop a lot? That's what they're saying here in Houston!

Don't worry about the Rockets. They're getting ready for a big playoff run and are still ahead of the Jazz in the standings.

Josh-

I've read of the arm-pumping concept before. It makes me tired faster!

I've got to dig back through some articles to find one that I'll send your way ... if I can find it .... I think there were some form-improving ideas in it.

Also, thanks for the review of the Newtons. I'm contemplating Nike's Lunar Trainers, Newtons or BioM's as my next shoe. (The Nike's obviously serve a different purpose.) I'll probably watch you burn the sole off your Newton's then burn up the Houston road racing circuit. That's all I'll need to be on the Newton band wagon!

Josh and Cory: I ran six miles this morning, and after reading this post I couldn't help trying the shorter stride technique. It felt good, especially due to the fact that my hip is still bothering me (actually hurting would be more accurate) and so not having to propel myself as far forward and increasing turnover instead was good. I think that I ran a decent pace too. I didn't have a watch so I don't know for sure, and I wasn't able to count my strides, but I will do so next time. Interesting concept, kept me entertained during my solo run! The thing that doesn't make sense to me is that fast runners seem to run lightly, with longer strides and a high knee... so this theory, while good on paper, doesn't seem to apply to everyone.

Re. Newtons: I ran with them on the track one day. Ok, it was a 9 miles speed workout. But still, at the end, my feet felt like they were going to shatter like glass. I don't need much cushioning, but this is just not enough. Cory, if you have a chance to try them before the purchase, I would do that. They are very $$ and very different.

Looking forward to running as a group again!!
